The National Gallery of Art is pleased to announce the establishment
of a five-year entry-level photograph conservator position that has
been made possible through the generous support of The Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation. The Gallery is seeking applications from
qualified candidates to work in the newly established Photograph
Conservation Department, to assist with the implementation of the
Conservation Division's short- and long-term goals and
responsibilities pertaining to the care of photographs in the
Gallery's collection and those on loan to the Gallery.  The selected
candidate will work with the Photograph Conservation Department and
Gallery staff to perform examinations, conservation treatments and
document Gallery photographs. Work will be performed in close
collaboration with Gallery conservators, scientists, curators, and
other Gallery staff to support historic and scientific research
related the Gallery's photograph collections.  Duties will include
acting as courier, traveling with works of art, as required,
providing guidance to Gallery staff and contractual employees on
environmental conditions, including temperature, relative humidity,
illumination levels, and other material influences to limit
detrimental effects on photographs in the Gallery's care.  The
photograph conservator will also participate in research and
educational programs with Gallery staff to advance scholarship
related to the study and conservation of photographic materials.

Eligibility: Candidates must be U.S. citizens and recent graduates
of recognized conservation training programs with a concentration in
photograph conservation and/or no more than five years of equivalent
experience. Candidates must demonstrate experience in the
conservation treatment of photographic materials, excellent written,
verbal communication and organizational skills as well as up-to-date
knowledge of exhibition standards and basic research methods in
photograph conservation. Email Michael Skalka at the address below

following materials: A curriculum vitae with basic biographical
information, current and permanent addresses, telephone numbers, a
description of current and previous conservation experience, and
three references with contact information.

A statement, not to exceed 1000 words, of interests and intent in
applying for the position.

No more than four samples of written research projects and/or
written documentation related to photograph conservation.

A portfolio demonstrating conservation treatment experience will be
reviewed if candidate is selected for an interview.
