This course has been organised due to the popular requests shown in
last year's questionnaire. It will be delivered by Alex
Schouvaloff, who has extensive teaching experience at London
Metropolitan University, City and Guilds of London Art School and
West Dean College. Alex is a Senior Lecturer at London Metropolitan
and Head of Wood Conservation at C&G. He also has a studio in East
London which specialises in the restoration and conservation of
japanned and lacquered artefacts.

The course will be practical and attendees will leave with a
selection of japanned panels. There will be some handouts including
the historical background and technical information. The focus of
the course will be on the traditional 17th Century and 18th Century
japanning techniques; a la 'Stalker and Parker', with a range of
modern materials also explored. The ethics and best conservation
practice will be addressed but all in an informal and relaxed
atmosphere. The emphasis will be on practical application and having
fun.

The venue is a conservation studio situated next to London Fields
with easy transport connections. It is within a 10 minute walking
distance from Bethnal Green-central line tube or a 5 minute walk
from London Fields main-line trains from Liverpool St. Station. The
fully equipped studio space has excellent natural light and has
enough bench space to accommodate 10 people. On site is an
Italian-run cafe where refreshments and a light lunch have been
included in the overall price.
