Limited of tenure: One year in the first instance

The Fitzwilliam Museum houses the principal collections of art and
antiquities of the University of Cambridge, and holds over half a
million objects in its care. The Department of Manuscripts and
Printed Books (MSSPB) preserves the finest museum collection of
illuminated manuscripts in the world outside the Vatican Museum, one
of the most important collections of manuscript and printed music in
this country, fine printed books, literary autographs and
correspondence. It is also responsible for the Museum's archives.
The collections total upwards of 132,500 objects: 1,000 illuminated
manuscripts and leaves; 1,500 music volumes; 20,000 rare printed
books, over 80,000 literary autographs and correspondence. There are
over 30,000 items in the Museum's archives.

The successful candidate would be a member of the /Cambridge
Illuminations Research Project, /which is publishing a series of
catalogues of the Western illuminated manuscripts dating from 6th to
the 16th century and preserved in the Fitzwilliam Museum and the
Cambridge Colleges.//

The role holder will undertake pigment analysis of illuminated
manuscripts in the Museum's collection and establish the techniques
most appropriate for the analysis of individual manuscripts and
pigments and identify the equipment necessary for analysis.

Candidates should have a PhD in Chemistry or relevant qualification
in Conservation, Accredited status through ICON would be
advantageous.
