Conservation Scientist Rathgen Research Laboratory Tentatively limited term 3 years available immediately Job reference: RF 1-2011 The Rathgen Research Laboratory, which forms part of the National Museums Berlin, is currently seeking to fill the position of a Conservation Scientist in order to develop and implement a cross-institutional IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Program. The position is graded at grade 13 TVoD (Collective Agreement for the German public service). The grading is provisional, as the grading agreement under the collective agreement has so far not been finalised. The task is to develop and implement in close cooperation with the Ethnological Museum and the Rathgen Research Laboratory with the National Museums Berlin a sustainable IPM concept, which eventually shall be be applied at the other institutions with the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz. IPM is composed of three components: the continuous monitoring, the specific actions against infestations if needed and subsequent changes within the close environment as a preventive measure. Main Activities / Responsibilities: Independently analysis of objects with the diagnostic tools available in the laboratory, carry out measurements and perform tests; analysis and interpretation of the results and build up of an entomological reference collection for the Stiftung Preussicher Kulturbesitz; analysis, independent development and implementation of suitable measures against pest infestation; setting up a sustainable monitoring program and concept for future implementation (budget, staffing); identification of factors favoring insect infestation and suggestions for elimination of these factors; development of IPM-guidelines for the Stiftung as well as training of employees; documentation und evaluation of the applied measures. Person Specification: Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Master in Biology (Entomology, Mycology), Conservation or equivalent degree; Special entomological and mycological knowledge in the field of storage, hygiene and material pests; experience in the implementation of IPM-programs in museum collections is of advantage; excellent German and English language, communication and team working skills as well as awareness of and sensitivity to the cultural and ethical aspects of museum collections.
