Subject: Classes at American Academy of Bookbinding
The American Academy of Bookbinding still has a few spaces in our spring Fine Binding classes. Don Glaister offers a five-day workshop focusing on Leather Box Making, May 30-June 3, 2011. In this class, participants will make leather clamshell style boxes for two books. Students will be taught how to measure and cut materials accurately, how to prepare and apply leather to their boxes, and if time permits, explore simple decorative techniques applied to the outside of their boxes. Some experience with leather bookbinding is required for this course. Visiting Artist Tim Ely will teach a five-day book design course, A Field of Play or Thinking Outside the Slipcase, June 6-10. In this class students will work with a master of the game of thinking beyond borders. We will confront the language of design in such a way as to free up the mind and explore areas that will be a dramatic unknown, a terra incognito of the expressive self. Working within the book format, we will explore various ideas and techniques that are proven to get one "off the dime" and find an authentic voice for expressing and materializing ideas. Monique Lallier offers a two-week class, Fundamentals of Bookbinding/Intermediate Fine Binding, at her studio in Summerfield, North Carolina, June 20-July 1, 2011 . The focus of the class will be on learning and revisiting sound bookbinding techniques with special emphasis on working with leather. Beginning students will complete a half-leather and a full-leather book and intermediate students will complete two full-leather books in the two-week course. No fine binding experience is needed for beginning students. Students will become familiar with hand sewing using a sewing frame, rounding and backing, edge decoration, weaving headbands, as well as leather paring and applying leather to their books. Don Glaister's Fundamentals/Intermediate Fine Binding class, May 16-27, is full.
