Position at the National Trust

From: Nigel Blades <nigel.blades<-a>
Date: Tuesday, March 22, 2011
Assistant Conservator
National Trust for England, Wales and Northern Ireland

Based in London
Full-time position

Contract: 8 month fixed term

Salary UKP22,057pa (pro rata)
+ UKP4465 Inner London Weighting (pro rata)

About us: There's no other organisation like the National Trust,
Europe's largest conservation body. No other organisation that
brings such an incredible array of places and spaces to life. No
other organisation with such an extraordinary wealth of talent,
expertise and insight. And that's why we've created the National
Trust Consultancy, home to specialists in every field of our work.
>From curators to building surveyors to architectural historians.
>From community involvement and commercial activity professionals to
authorities in archaeology and conservation.

About the role: Joining us as an Assistant Conservator is an
unparalleled opportunity to preserve real national treasures--from
Turners and Van Dycks to Chippendale furniture and Adam's interiors.
It's also a chance to develop your specialist skills with some of
the best conservators in the business. In particular, you'll support
our Preventive Conservation Adviser (Environment), as you collate
and report on environmental monitoring and control data for
properties across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It's all
about keeping our high conservation standards up to scratch and
making sure our conservation and property staff have the best
possible support. So whether you're dealing with issues like mould,
supporting the delivery of training courses or helping us secure
grants and seek the advice of external experts, you'll be playing a
vital part in preserving the nation's heritage.

About you: Ideally, you'll have some conservation experience under
your belt and a knowledge of history, art history or science to back
it up. You'll certainly have either a conservation qualification or
a degree in a relevant subject. But whether this is your first job
as after conservation training or the next step in your career,
you'll have plenty of preventive or practical remedial conservation
know-how. You'll also be self-motivated and a real team player, and
as well as solid communication skills and fluency in written
English, you'll have well-developed organisational and documentation
abilities. So you'll know your way around a computer and be
confident working on your own initiative--both at our London Hub and
at properties across the country.
