Collection Care Leader
Knowledge, Information, Research and Technology
Alexander Turnbull Library
National Library of New Zealand

Permanent full-time (40 hours per week)
Vacancy Number: 11/096

Closing Date: 5pm Friday 6 May 2011

The Alexander Turnbull Library is seeking a Collection Care Leader
to provide leadership for the development and implementation of the
Library's collection care policies and practices.

The Turnbull Library is New Zealand's pre-eminent research library
with extensive collections including books, manuscripts, sound
recordings, drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, maps, ephemera
and digital media. It forms a part of the National Library of New
Zealand.

The Library is undergoing major change with the redevelopment of its
building and realignment of services across the wider National
Library organisation. Currently, a sizeable percentage of
Turnbull's collections is securely packed and protected for the
redevelopment period. Some of the collections are stored and
available at Archives New Zealand and at the Library's temporary
reading room at Thorndon Quay. Over the next period, the Collection
Care Leader will work closely with a number of project managers
involved with relocation and building activities, and with senior
managers and curators and will be expected to provide authoritative
specialist advice.

During the period of relocation, Collection Care staff are working
in temporary premises, and conservation treatment work is minimal.
The ability to manage specialist teams during a time of major change
is essential. It is expected that staff will move back to the
National Library building in early 2012. There will be an
opportunity during the relocation period for the Collection Care
Leader to develop new systems for service delivery, programming and
reporting.

The successful applicant will have a degree or equivalent in
conservation, and at least 10 years practical experience. They will
also have demonstrable skill and have had at least five years
experience in line-managing staff.

The role is a senior one reporting to the Associate Chief Librarian
(Research Collections). The Collection Care Leader will be a member
of the Turnbull Library management team.
