Preservation Materials Scientist Image Permanence Institute The Image Permanence Institute (IPI), a recognized leader in the development and deployment of sustainable practices for the preservation of images and cultural property, is seeking an established Preservation Materials Scientist to join their world class research facility. Candidates should demonstrate experience in both science and cultural heritage through their education, employment and publication history. A Masters or PhD in chemistry, materials science, physics, engineering, or equivalent experience is required. The candidate must be willing to support IPI's mission of developing the knowledge, tools, and technology necessary to address broad issues of preservation that meet the needs of diverse cultural heritage institutions. IPI's primary areas of expertise include: Sustainable practices in environmental management and preservation The stability of imaging and information media The nature of photographic images and other forms of print media Development of ISO standards for imaging media and preservation The Preservation Materials Scientist will work with IPI staff as a high-level contributor to IPI's preservation and materials research and educational goals. Work will focus on the design and implementation of experiments in preservation research. Other activities include work on current initiatives, help with the development of new projects and facilitation of educational and outreach efforts associated with research results. The individual hired will also be expected to develop practical and useful educational tools and publications for the field. Candidates should have three or more years experience working in a scientific laboratory. Experience with preservation science as demonstrated by education, employment, or publication history is preferred as is experience working in a cultural institution (museum, library or archive). Experience with teaching or presentation, technical writing, and grant writing is preferred. IPI is a nonprofit, university-based laboratory devoted to preservation research. It is the world's largest independent laboratory with this specific scope. IPI was founded in 1985 through the combined efforts and sponsorship of the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology. Funding for IPI's preservation research and outreach efforts has come primarily from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. IPI provides information, consulting services, practical tools and preservation technology to libraries, archives, and museums worldwide. The imaging and consumer preservation industries also use IPI's consulting, testing and educational services.
