Preservation Materials Scientist
Image Permanence Institute

The Image Permanence Institute (IPI), a recognized leader in the
development and deployment of sustainable practices for the
preservation of images and cultural property, is seeking an
established Preservation Materials Scientist to join their world
class research facility. Candidates should demonstrate experience in
both science and cultural heritage through their education,
employment and publication history. A Masters or PhD in chemistry,
materials science, physics, engineering, or equivalent experience is
required. The candidate must be willing to support IPI's mission of
developing the knowledge, tools, and technology necessary to address
broad issues of preservation that meet the needs of diverse cultural
heritage institutions. IPI's primary areas of expertise include:

Sustainable practices in environmental management and
    preservation

The stability of imaging and information media

The nature of photographic images and other forms of print media

Development of ISO standards for imaging media and preservation

The Preservation Materials Scientist will work with IPI staff as a
high-level contributor to IPI's preservation and materials research
and educational goals. Work will focus on the design and
implementation of experiments in preservation research. Other
activities include work on current initiatives, help with the
development of new projects and facilitation of educational and
outreach efforts associated with research results. The individual
hired will also be expected to develop practical and useful
educational tools and publications for the field.

Candidates should have three or more years experience working in a
scientific laboratory. Experience with preservation science as
demonstrated by education, employment, or publication history is
preferred as is experience working in a cultural institution
(museum, library or archive). Experience with teaching or
presentation, technical writing, and grant writing is preferred.

IPI is a nonprofit, university-based laboratory devoted to
preservation research. It is the world's largest independent
laboratory with this specific scope. IPI was founded in 1985 through
the combined efforts and sponsorship of the Rochester Institute of
Technology and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology.
Funding for IPI's preservation research and outreach efforts has
come primarily from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the
Institute of Museum and Library Services, and The Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation. IPI provides information, consulting services, practical
tools and preservation technology to libraries, archives, and
museums worldwide. The imaging and consumer preservation industries
also use IPI's consulting, testing and educational services. IPI is
part of the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at the Rochester
Institute of Technology located southwest of the city of Rochester,
New York.
