Book Conservation Technician University of Pennsylvania Libraries This is a one-year term appointment Position Summary: The primary responsibility of this position is to perform various book conservation treatments on non-circulating library materials in the Fairman Rogers Collection of historical works on the horse and equitation. The focus of the treatment is to stabilize the materials for digitization and to preserve the collection for the long term. This position requires the incumbent to work directly with conservation and library staff in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library, and the Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text and Image. Responsibilities: Under the guidance of the conservation supervisor, performs various conservation treatments of bound materials, including surface cleaning, mending, guarding, hinging, humidification and flattening, tape removal, adhesive reduction, sewing, case repairs, rebinding and leather consolidation. Assists in training and supervision of staff in minor treatments. Coordinates treatment of books for digitization. Trains and supervises staff in construction of protective enclosures. Maintains treatment records and photographic documentation. Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 2 years experience in the conservation of library materials, preferably rare books and manuscripts. Demonstrated knowledge of current book and paper conservation and bookbinding techniques. A portfolio of relevant work is required. Ability to coordinate and execute treatments based on established treatment proposals, within deadlines. High level of manual dexterity, and ability to concentrate on repetitive treatments. Ability to push a book truck and lift boxes up to 30lb. Basic computer skills including word processing and spreadsheets. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Rank and Salary: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
