Paper Conservator - van de Velde drawings
National Maritime Museum
London

Fixed term contract for two years

UKP23,000 - UKP30,000

The National Maritime Museum houses one of the largest collections
of drawings by the Willem van de Veldes (father and son), with over
1500 items. Covering an extremely diverse range of themes, the
collection spans the late 17th century and includes works by van de
Velde the Elder in the 1630s, the work of father and son during the
1650s and '60s, through to the mature work of the Younger in the
1670s and beyond.

In this key role, you will perform a systematic survey of the entire
collection, carry out conservation treatment of all prints and
drawings, and produce a report and preservation plan as a legacy for
its long-term management. As well as conducting research to expand
understanding of techniques and materials, your responsibilities
will include training colleagues to ensure the project's continuity,
organising a seminar on the works of the van de Veldes and
publishing an article at the end of the fellowship.

With a relevant qualification and proven experience in the
conservation of master prints and drawings, you should combine
excellent coaching and communication skills with a track record of
materials and techniques research. You must also be well organised,
and able to plan and prioritise your own workload.

The post is generously funded by a grant from the Esmee Fairbairn
Foundation.
