Paper Conservator - van de Velde drawings National Maritime Museum London Fixed term contract for two years UKP23,000 - UKP30,000 The National Maritime Museum houses one of the largest collections of drawings by the Willem van de Veldes (father and son), with over 1500 items. Covering an extremely diverse range of themes, the collection spans the late 17th century and includes works by van de Velde the Elder in the 1630s, the work of father and son during the 1650s and '60s, through to the mature work of the Younger in the 1670s and beyond. In this key role, you will perform a systematic survey of the entire collection, carry out conservation treatment of all prints and drawings, and produce a report and preservation plan as a legacy for its long-term management. As well as conducting research to expand understanding of techniques and materials, your responsibilities will include training colleagues to ensure the project's continuity, organising a seminar on the works of the van de Veldes and publishing an article at the end of the fellowship. With a relevant qualification and proven experience in the conservation of master prints and drawings, you should combine excellent coaching and communication skills with a track record of materials and techniques research. You must also be well organised, and able to plan and prioritise your own workload. The post is generously funded by a grant from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
