The Chief Conservator is responsible for the planning and management
of all activities for the Conservation Section at the new National
Museum of Qatar (NMoQ). The Chief Conservator will oversee all
aspects of the conservation, care and preservation research for the
collection, as well as the design and implementation of both
temporary and permanent laboratory facilities. Reporting to the
Deputy Director for Curatorial and Collections Management, this
position requires close collaboration and planning with the
Curatorial, Collections Management, and Exhibitions teams on
temporary and core exhibitions to bring the new museum to opening.

The Chief Conservator will be responsible for planning, policies and
procedures relevant to conservation of the collection; supervising
and monitoring all conservation projects; and, working closely with
the Collections Management staff to prepare disaster, emergency and
security plans.  The Chief Conservator will be responsible for a
planned team of three additional conservators (objects, textiles,
and paper), conservation consultants, as well as developing a
training program for Qatari conservation assistants and student
interns.  The Chief Conservator, in the longer term, would be
expected to conduct general and object-specific research, as well as
present and publish on that research both in academic settings and
for public programming, raising the profile a museum conservation
issues in Qatar. The Chief Conservator will initiate and maintain
important relationships with other institutions, both in Qatar and
internationally.

Qualifications

    Minimum Masters Degree in Conservation from an internationally
    recognized conservation program

    Minimum five years management experience in a museum
    conservation setting; minimum 10 years solid experience in
    conservation practice

    Broad knowledge and experience in the conservation of
    ethnographic, archaeological, natural history, and textile
    collections

    Experience with state-of-the-art technologies and standards for
    the preservation, routine care, storage, and exhibition of
    collections

    Technically adept with photography, databases and electronic
    conservation record keeping

    Solid understanding of museum collections, conservation, and
    research ethics

    Excellent written, communication, presentation, and negotiation
    skills

    Excellent budget and project management skills

    Flexibility of working hours required to meet deadlines

    Successful candidate must demonstrate cultural, gender,
    religious, race, nationality and age sensitivities and
    adaptabilities

    Successful candidate will possess a sense of adventure,
    nimbleness and a generous team spirit
