Associate Project Specialist Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), located at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, California, works internationally to advance conservation practice in the visual arts--broadly interpreted to include objects, collections, architecture, and sites. The Institute serves the conservation community through scientific research, education and training, model field projects, and the dissemination of the results of both its own work and the work of others in the field. The GCI's Field Projects Department is seeking an Associate Project Specialist to fill a two-year, limited-term position. The Field Projects Department's objectives are: Advance conservation practice through the development and implementation of model projects which incorporate strong research, planning and educational objectives. In all projects, develop strong collaborative relationships so as to build local expertise, ensure sustainability, evaluate work in progress and broadly disseminate information resulting from projects. Disseminate our findings through professional publications and conferences; and contribute to the advancement of the field of conservation through the organization of seminars, symposia and workshops. Overview: Working under the direction of project managers, assists in the conceptualization, development, and implementation of physical conservation projects on decorated architectural surfaces on archaeological sites and/or historic and contemporary built heritage. Includes documentation, assessment, analysis of deterioration, identification of causes, and development of conservation actions. Also assists in design and implementation of conservation and management policies. Responsibilities: Works on site to conserve wall paintings and murals. Conducts bibliographic, lab, and field-related research; contributes to the synthesis of information into conservation actions and programs. Writes reports and publications. Assists with workshops and conferences. Qualifications: Graduate degree in conservation, with an emphasis on wall paintings or decorated architectural surfaces, preferred. 2-5 years experience working in physical conservation of decorated architectural surfaces on cultural heritage buildings or sites. Excellent conservators' skills needed, including documentation, hand skills, technical research, and report writing. Ability to perform analysis of paints/plasters and interpret results. Good interpersonal, written, and verbal skills; ability to work in interdisciplinary teams. Working knowledge of GIS, Photoshop, AutoCAD, and InDesign preferred. Foreign language preferred but not essential. Must be available for international travel. An excellent benefits package and salary commensurate with experience will be provided.
