Contact: Simon Swann +44 1502676044 swannsh<-a t->btinternet< . >com The ICON Stone and Wall Paintings committee, as part of its continuing programme of day events, is now organising a conference of two separate days of talks and presentations on the conservation of Architectural Plasterwork. Within the context of these presentations historic architectural plaster work is considered to include both plain and ornamental plasterwork applied to historic buildings (internally or externally) and requiring conservation. This conference is neither primarily concerned with wall paintings nor the application of new plasters (except where these form an important part of the overall conservation process). It is some years now since there has been any detailed publication of methods used in the conservation of historic plasterwork and it is hoped that these two days provide a review of currents methods and knowledge, specifically relating to the in situ conservation and the technical understanding of historic plasterwork. Through a series of illustrated talks by conservators, researchers, analysts and archaeologists it is hoped a range of detailed technical presentations and case studies can help provide new insight into this subject. It is expected that submissions of suitable standard will be published in an ICON Stone and Wall Painting Publication. Poster submissions may also be made. Submissions with good technical detail are invited in response to the following topics and questions. Understanding plasters types, materials and construction; including both interior and exterior plasters and renders. Materials analysis of historic plasterwork including both plaster layers and painted and decorated surfaces. How do we assess the historic significance of plasterwork? Inspection and condition assessments of historic plasterwork. Conservation techniques to support, conserve and consolidate plaster in situ. The partial re-instatement/re-plastering of missing sections of plaster as part of a wider plaster conservation scheme. Recording, referencing and data base collections of historic "in situ plasters" examples. Museum and other collections of architectural plasters. Specialist plaster types, conservation and repair. Submissions: Contributions to the day may be made in the form of academic papers and illustrated presentations (supported by a paper suitable for publication). Papers which do not include adequate technical detail will not be considered. A limited number of Poster submissions will also be considered We are now inviting the submission of abstracts in response to the above questions. Abstracts of approximately 200-400 words including at least 3 images may be submitted. These should reach the organisers by June 18 2011, later submissions will be considered for day 2 in spring 2012.
