Seminars on paper conservation

From: Hildegard Homburger <hombu<-a>
Date: Thursday, January 20, 2011
3 seminars held in cooperation with the IADA (Internationale
Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Archiv-, Buch- und Grafikrestauratoren):

"Identification of Prints"
Hildegard Homburger, Papierrestaurierung
Krefelder Str.17
10555 Berlin
Jun 2-3, 2011
Lecturer: Hildegard Homburger

Participants: 6
Language: English

The artistic printing techniques and their reproduction methods
    will be presented:

Relief: woodcut, wood engraving, lino cut, metal relief
etc., modern relief: letterpress, half-tone, relief etching
        etc.

Intaglio: engraving, mezzotint, dry point, etching, soft
ground, aquatint, lift ground etc., photogravure, rotation
        intaglio

        Planographic: lithography, chromolithography,
        photolithography, collotype, etc.
        Screen print und stencil

        Digital: laser, inkjet, etc.

Their different methods will be explained in detail. Original
prints will be examined in magnification. With original prints
the distinctive characteristics will be worked out and the
    identification exercised.

"Water and Paper, Conservation Principles"
Jun 6-7, 2011
Vienna, Institut fur Papierrestaurierung

Lecturer: Doris Muller-Hess, Hildegard Homburger

Participants: 2
Language: English

Paper contains mainly cellulose, which has the ability to absorb
and desorb water. The interaction between cellulose and water
influences the behaviour of the paper. During paper production
the choice of fibre material, the degree of beating and the
method of drying defines the characteristics of the paper and
its ability to absorb and desorb water.

During conservation treatment water is introduced into paper and
removed again. In this process chemical and physical changes in
the micro and macro structures of the paper are taking place.
With the aid of the didactic material compiled by Irene Bruckle
and Gerhard Banik in their project "Water and Paper" the
principles of the interaction of cellulose and water and the
resulting behaviour of paper in contact with water will be
explained. Various treatment methods of humidification and
washing and drying techniques - their advantages and
disadvantages- will be demonstrated and discussed. The gained
understanding of the principles will help to evaluate the chosen
    methods.

Fee
    260 EUR, IADA members
    300 EUR, non-members

"Conservation of Tracing Paper"
Hildegard Homburger, Papierrestaurierung
Krefelder Str.17
10555 Berlin
Oct 13-14, 2011

Lecturer: Hildegard Homburger

Participants: 6
Language: English

First day:

Introduction to the history of the manufacture processes
Slide show of various damages found on tracing papers
    Introduction to various treatment techniques:
Every participant gets an object on which he/she will practice
    the following treatments

Removal of tapes, water and pressure sensitive,
Mending of tears with aqueous adhesives,
        Mending losses with tracing paper,
Flattening, demonstration of Hard Soft Sandwich

Second day:

Every participant will has the opportunity to practice the
    following treatments:

        Dyeing of mending paper,
Mending of tears with synthetic adhesives,
Lining with Japanese paper and starch paste,
        Paper pulp application,

The main focus of the seminar is to gain an understanding of the
several treatment techniques through hands on working on
    originals and dummies.
