"Establishing a Conservation Practice" (March 3-31, 2011) is a course for conservators who wish to own or manage a professional conservation business. This course will be of interest to those thinking about establishing their own professional conservation practice, making their private practice more "business-like" or for those who have taken on some managerial functions for their employer. "Digital Photography 101 for Conservators" (April 28-May 26, 2011) is intended for conservators who want to learn how digital photography can be used in their profession. The course will cover the components of a digital image, storing and archiving digital images and how conservators are using digital photography and some of the ethical issues involved. "Marketing for Conservation" (June 16-July 14, 2011) is perfect for conservators who own or manage a professional conservation business or laboratory. Whether you are in private practice or part of a conservation laboratory doing outside work, you need customers. How do you reach them? How do you keep them? How do you decide where to use your limited time and money most effectively for marketing? This course will help to guide you through the world of marketing specifically for conservation. "Laboratory Safety for Conservation" (July 21-August 18, 2011) covers important topics that are essential to your safety, the safety of your co-workers and preventing damage from environmental hazards. The course leads you through development of a chemical hygiene plan for your laboratory, based on readings, videos, and other materials that illustrate general principles as well as specific guidelines for safety in the laboratory. "Estimating Conservation Projects" (September 1-29, 2011) will teach you how to analyze a project, how to categorize costs, and how to estimate project expenses. Lessons include what to include when presenting an estimate to a client, how to break estimates into smaller components for greater accuracy, how to manage project members with different backgrounds and more. "Mitigating Risk: Contracts and Insurance for Conservation" (October 13-November 10, 2011) will teach you how to identify the risks you face, and learn how to reduce those risks and how to manage risks through the use of contracts, insurance, and other means. Upon completion of this course you will be able to identify the three most significant risks to your conservation business, understand how to use contracts, insurance and other measures to reduce the impact of identified risks, identify types of insurance that may be required by law in your state and other topics.
