"Introduction to the Conservation and Restoration of Paintings"
New York
Maria Scarpini

I will be teaching a Course entitled "Introduction to the
Conservation and Restoration of Paintings" at Hunter College in the
Continuing Education Department this Spring Semester. The Course
will Start February 15 2011 and will continue for 9 weeks every
Tuesday from 6 to 9pm.

The aim of this Course is to introduce students to the contemporary
theory and practice of Painting Conservation and Restoration and to
the complexity and reality of this discipline.

The theoretical part will

Address an historical review of painting techniques with a focus
    on painting on canvas.

Introduce and contrast the concepts of "conservation" and
"restoration," exploring their historical origins and
theoretical developments, through their literature and visual
    examples.

Address basic introduction to chemistry for conservation and
    cover the polarity of solvents.

There will be also a practical part where the instructor will
illustrate and conduct the students through surface cleaning and
discolored varnish removal techniques; methods and techniques for
tear repairs, flattening of surfaces, filling in of paint loss and
retouching.

Methods and techniques for painting relining and strip lining will
be discussed and illustrated in a Conservation Lab..
