"Introduction to the Conservation and Restoration of Paintings" New York Maria Scarpini I will be teaching a Course entitled "Introduction to the Conservation and Restoration of Paintings" at Hunter College in the Continuing Education Department this Spring Semester. The Course will Start February 15 2011 and will continue for 9 weeks every Tuesday from 6 to 9pm. The aim of this Course is to introduce students to the contemporary theory and practice of Painting Conservation and Restoration and to the complexity and reality of this discipline. The theoretical part will Address an historical review of painting techniques with a focus on painting on canvas. Introduce and contrast the concepts of "conservation" and "restoration," exploring their historical origins and theoretical developments, through their literature and visual examples. Address basic introduction to chemistry for conservation and cover the polarity of solvents. There will be also a practical part where the instructor will illustrate and conduct the students through surface cleaning and discolored varnish removal techniques; methods and techniques for tear repairs, flattening of surfaces, filling in of paint loss and retouching.
