Although Marianne North was an amateur painter, her artwork and the painted, gilded gallery in which her collection is displayed is nothing short of awesome, although sadly under-visited. For more information and an example of her work, go to <URL:http://www.kew.org/collections/art-images/marianne-north/> Jonathan Farley, Senior Conservator at the Kew Gardens has made it his mission to get Marianne North and the gallery noticed and cared for once more. While the official opening is due in March this year, the majority of the conservation to the gallery was completed nearly a year ago, and visitors have been enjoying it since then. However, the recent reinstatement of the original paintings marks a significant moment in the gallery's history, and it is with great pleasure that we offer this day of exploration of the art, the artist, the history of the gallery and its recent restoration. To start the day, Jonathan will take the group on a tour of the Art Conservation Studio, outlining the processes used for this huge project. A walk through the gardens will bring us to the gallery itself, where Jonathan will conclude with a talk on the history of Marianne North and the gallery. Rachel Witt, paintings conservator with Plowden and Smith who lead the conservation of the canvas paintings and gilding, will then give a lecture on this side of the project. This will leave us at the gallery itself, which can be enjoyed at leisure with a short walk to the visitor centre or the Orangery for lunch. Additional information: We will meet at 10.15 at the Herbarium, where Jonathan will meet us for the tour. These are the staff quarters of the site; please ask for a map if needed.
