Director, Conservation Center Collections and Conservation The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) Reports to: Deputy Director General for Collections and Conservation Salary Range: 400,000 - 630,000 EGP (70,000 - 100,000 USD) The Director, Conservation Center would be responsible for the planning and management of all activities at the Conservation Center. The Director of the Conservation Center would oversee all aspects of the conservation, care and related research primarily for the collections of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) as well as provide leadership for collections care throughout the country. This would include close collaboration and planning with the Director, Museum Collections with regards to management and development of the GEM collections but with specific focus on preservation. Responsibilities Fiscal and financial oversight of the Conservation Center Planning, policies and procedures relevant to conservation of the collection at the Conservation Center through the preparation and implementation of an annual conservation plan Supervise and monitor all conservation projects Prepare disaster, emergency and security plans Supervise and monitor the artefact store, storage of works on paper and archives Coordinates with the Director of Museum Collections on management, registration and care of the collections between the museum and the center Responsible for the security, preservation, documentation and interpretation of all collections at, to and from the Conservation Center General and object-specific research, and the publication of that research Coordinate and contribute to departmental objectives including exhibitions, public programming and collections management Work with senior leadership to raise funds as necessary Day to day operations of the Conservation Center and integration with the museum's exhibitions and traveling exhibition program Ensure and adhere to international professional conservation standards Qualifications Advanced degree (masters degree or better) in collections and conservation 5 years management experience with museum operations in a relevant conservation department Experience conserving objects of a broad range of materials Specialist knowledge, interest and/or experience in museum administration and management Demonstrated knowledge of financial development and the ability to manage on-going fiscal responsibilities Knowledge of the legal aspects of museum operation and legislation for collections care and conservation Excellent oral and written communication skills; fluency in spoken and written English, with other languages an asset (Arabic, French) Ability to interpret the collections and communicate knowledge relevant to the collections; Knowledge of the techniques of evaluating the condition of artefacts and specifying solutions for restoration, conservation and storage Knowledge of current technologies and systems and standards for the long term protection and storage of collections Knowledge of relevant exhibiting techniques that ensure the proper display and security of collections Knowledge of the current market, collecting ethics, and current customs regulations in the areas of collecting and conservation Experience of computerized conservation records system Duration of Contract: Continuing with a probationary period of six months Applications (curriculum vitae and cover letter) for the position should be submitted by email, not later than March 31, 2011, to the attention of: Mr. Mohamed Ghoneim, Executive Committee - Supreme Council of Antiquities Grand Egyptian Museum mohamedghoneim_38<-a t->hotmail< . >com All applications should also be CC'd to the following email addresses: Dr. Shadia Khenawy, Chairman Grand Egyptian Museum, Executive Committee for Project Implementation shadia.kenawy<-a t->gem< . >gov< . >eg Technical Committee, Grand Egyptian Museum <technicalcommittee<-a t->gem< . >gov< . >eg> Ms. Maria Piacente, TD Coordinator PMCM, Grand Egyptian Museum mpiacente<-a t->lord< . >ca *** Conservation DistList Instance 24:34 Distributed: Thursday, January 13, 2011 Message Id: cdl-24-34-032 ***Received on Thursday, 13 January, 2011
