Subject: Deborah Wender retires
Deborah Wender, the Northeast Document Conservation Center's Director of Book Conservation, is retiring in April 2011 after a 30 year career in book binding and book conservation. Under Deb Wender's direction, the NEDCC book conservation department has become one of the most highly respected laboratories for book conservation in the United States. Deb has advised countless clients on the care and handling of books, and her one-day workshops on caring for scrapbooks were always sold out. Many young book conservators have received internship training under her guidance, and she has fostered a dedication to excellence among all her book lab staff members. Over the years, Deb Wender has supervised the treatment of many of the nation's most significant historical artifacts, including journals carried on the Lewis and Clark expeditions; Washington's inaugural Bible; a large group of fire-damaged sacred incunables; travel albums created by Isabella Stewart Gardner; the Custis Atlas and a seventeenth century Yorktown ledger belonging to Colonial Williamsburg; a photograph album of Julia Margaret Cameron; and Babe Ruth, Alfred Stieglitz, Woody Guthrie, and Greer Garson scrapbooks. We at NEDCC will miss her expertise, her commitment, and her great sense of humor. We wish her the very best for a well-deserved retirement. The Northeast Document Conservation Center will undertake a search for an experienced conservation professional to assume leadership of the book conservation laboratory. The Director of Book Conservation leads and manages a staff of professional book conservators, confers with clients to evaluate their collections and develop appropriate treatment proposals, and works closely with the Center's other department heads on joint projects.
