Position at Tate

From: Jenny Smith <jenny.smith<-at->
Date: Friday, December 4, 2009
Microfadometer Researcher - Anoxic Framing
Tate
Millbank, London

Closing date: Friday, 18 December 2009

Salary: up to UKP30,500 per annum
Contract type: Fixed term contract (1 year)

The aim of Tate is to increase public awareness, understanding and
appreciation of British art from the 16th century to the present
day, and of international modern and contemporary works of art. The
Anoxic Project assesses the possibility of framing works of art on
paper in oxygen-free conditions, in order to improve their stability
in light. Having recently secured another year of funding (with the
possibility of another), the next phase is to investigate the
commercial potential of any research and technology developed by the
project. Tate will then use this information to develop a research
strategy, of which the newly created micro-fading spectrometer will
play a significant role.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced instrument scientist
to apply their expertise in this ground-breaking heritage science
project. Making an impressive contribution to the commercialism of
Anoxic Framing, you'll conduct research into colorants, graphic
media and printed materials--materials which are assessed for their
sensitivity to anoxia. Based on your test findings, you'll recommend
works within Tate's collection that are suitable for anoxic framing
and develop a database of all pigments and tested materials.
Reporting into the project manager, you'll investigate new testing
methods and produce reports, papers and presentations for various
audiences. You'll also identify the potential of using the
microfadometer technology in providing a commercial consultancy
service.

Bringing a PhD or equivalent experience in colour science, optics,
instrument design or similar, you've operated a spectrophotometer
(or a similar instrument) before, having done so for research
purposes. Able to prioritise a varied workload and work well under
the pressure of deadlines, you know to create and manage informative
databases. A naturally strong communicator, you are skilled in
technical report writing and you'll be the ideal person to explain
complex concepts in a clear manner.
