Subject: Zig Zag canvas extensions
I am undertaking a technical investigation of a painting which has canvas additions top and bottom joined in a zig-zag. The canvases are not stitched together but adhered onto the lining canvas which serves to hold the original and the additional canvases adjacent to each other. Along the top section of the painting, the original canvas has been cut in a zig-zag fashion, each zig-zag measuring roughly 3 cm wide, and an additional strip of canvas, also cut in a zig-zag fashion, has been added at the top. Both canvases align perfectly. Has anyone ever seen this method?
