Textile Conservator The Bowes Museum Salary: UKP22,000 (post may be funded for up to 3 years depending on experience) Responsible to: Conservation Manager Liaising with: Keeper of Textiles Principal Keeper The Director The Bowes Museum has one of the UK's most comprehensive collections of textiles representing European decorative arts from the 15th to the 19th centuries. It is our intention to widen access to this collection and, with the opening of a new Textiles and Dress Gallery in autumn 2009, to create opportunities for display, better storage facilities and a tapestry conservation programme. Purpose: The Textile Conservator will work on a two/three year project (depending on experience) funded by the Pilgrim Trust, to carry out preventive and remedial conservation on the Museum's important tapestry collection, of which there are 176 pieces (comprising of about 65 large scale hangings, plus large fragments and furniture pieces). The post will be based in the textile department and conservation studio and also in the new, multi-purpose textile gallery. Here in the public space, the postholder will carry out a conservation survey on the tapestry collection and undertake conservation work, as far as is practicable. The Museum's has an established Textile Conservation Studio with good basic facilities for the treatment of tapestries. Three tapestries from the collection have been conserved in the studio. The Conservator will be a key member of the small conservation team. They will build internal and external audiences for conservation, championing the work of the Museum.
