Textile Conservator
The Bowes Museum

Salary: UKP22,000 (post may be funded for up to 3 years depending on
experience)

Responsible to: Conservation Manager
Liaising with: Keeper of Textiles
                Principal Keeper
                The Director

The Bowes Museum has one of the UK's most comprehensive collections
of textiles representing European decorative arts from the 15th to
the 19th centuries. It is our intention to widen access to this
collection and, with the opening of a new Textiles and Dress Gallery
in autumn 2009, to create opportunities for display, better storage
facilities and a tapestry conservation programme.

Purpose: The Textile Conservator will work on a two/three year
project (depending on experience) funded by the Pilgrim Trust, to
carry out preventive and remedial conservation on the Museum's
important tapestry collection, of which there are 176 pieces
(comprising of about 65 large scale hangings, plus large fragments
and furniture pieces).

The post will be based in the textile department and conservation
studio and also in the new, multi-purpose textile gallery. Here in
the public space, the postholder will carry out a conservation
survey on the tapestry collection and undertake conservation work,
as far as is practicable.

The Museum's has an established Textile Conservation Studio with
good basic facilities for the treatment of tapestries. Three
tapestries from the collection have been conserved in the studio.

The Conservator will be a key member of the small conservation team.
They will build internal and external audiences for conservation,
championing the work of the Museum.

The Bowes Museum encourages staff to work towards Accreditation
under the Professional Accreditation of Conservator Restorers (PACR)
scheme run by ICON.
