Date: Tuesday, September 22, 2009
Scraping Gut and Plucking Feathers: The Deterioration and
Conservation of Feather and Gut Materials
ICON Ethnography Group conference
University of York, Huntingdon Room
Tuesday 6 October 2009

The conference encompasses the presentation of papers and posters
which will cover colour aberrations, mutations and the morphology of
feathers. It will also include presentations on cleaning and repair
techniques as well as on display issues for both feather and gut
materials. The day will conclude with a practical demonstration and
discussion on the subject of conserving feathers led by Allyson Rae.
Allyson has many years of experience treating feather objects and
has recently taught two very successful feather conservation
workshops. The practical demonstration will be filmed on stage and
can thus be easily viewed by all delegates of the conference.

Also included in the day will be the annual general meeting of the
Ethnography Group. During this meeting we will discuss forthcoming
events, current issues and changes within the committee. There will
also be an opportunity for group members to discuss any other
business. An agenda of the AGM will be sent together with the
registration confirmation for the conference.

The cost of the conference is UKP70 for ICON members, UKP80 for
non-members and UKP60 for a limited number of student places. The
fee includes handouts, coffee, tea and lunch. Abstracts of the
presentations will be provided along with a bibliography for further
reading.

Payment must be made prior to the conference. 50 - 60 places are
available. Please send proof of status and/or ICON membership number
together with your registration form. The registration form and
programme can be downloaded from the Ethnography Group page on the
