Subject: Passive environmental control
The following is posted on behalf of an acquaintance who wishes ultimately to bequeath a property to one of the national heritage bodies. The property includes a separate garage which is to be rebuilt as a general museum store. The property is not always occupied and air-conditioning in the store is not practical. The building will be well-insulated. Minimal heating will be used in winter to raise the temperature and relative humidity above outside conditions to safe levels. The problem is in summer. A prolonged hot spell will eventually cause the temperature and relative humidity to rise (and stay high due to the insulation). Can this effect be simply negated, possibly by automatically controlled vents or reflectors? (It will be in direct sun every morning). Does anyone know of any similar successful projects or suitable suppliers (in the UK)? Would photovoltaic vents be suitable? Are there screens in vents to keep out dust/insects? Any suggestions appreciated. *** Conservation DistList Instance 22:57 Distributed: Monday, April 6, 2009 Message Id: cdl-22-57-012 ***Received on Saturday, 4 April, 2009
