Workshop on ornamental iron

The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training is
hosting an Ornamental Iron Workshop on June 18-19, 2009 in New
Orleans, LA. The purpose of this event is to educate people about
the differences in cast and wrought iron and preservation or
restoration methods for each type of material. This workshop will be
useful to anyone who cares for historic buildings that contain
railings, balconies, or other decorative elements, parks, or
cemeteries.

Cost of the workshop is:

    $399 Registration
    $299 Early Bird Registration (runs until May 11, 2009)
    $99 Student Registration (Student must provide photocopy of
    current student ID and a letter of interest.

    This should be emailed to jason_church<-at->contractor<.>nps<.>gov before
    being selected for the 5 available student seats).

Only 25 workshop seats are available on a first come first serve
basis. Checks can be written to Ornamental Iron Workshop/NSU and
mailed to:

Workshop instructors will be conservators Jason Church, Eric
Schindleholz, and Mary Striegel.

Lectures will be held at the Architecture Department of Tulane,
Richardson Memorial Building Room 204.

Hands-on workshop sessions will be held in St. Louis Cemetery #2.

Day one

    Tour of iron working facility (this will help familiarize the
    students with the construction methods of different iron types)

    Lectures on:

        Construction techniques of ornamental ironwork
        Documentation
        Metallic structures
        Mechanisms of deterioration

Day two

    Lectures on:

        Conservation Sequencing
        Safety

    In the field/Hands-on round robin sessions:

        Documentation
        Re/Setting
        Cleaning
        Simple repairs
        Rust treatments
        Surface finishes

Dorm rooms are available during the workshop on the Tulane Campus.
The rooms are double occupancy at a rate of $25 per night, (includes
linens). If interested please call Jason Church 318-356-7444.
Participants are also welcome to make independent lodging
arrangements.
