National Archives of Scotland

The National Archives of Scotland (NAS) is a Government Department which
has responsibility for selecting, preserving and making available the
public records of Scotland.

Applications are invited from experienced and qualified conservators
to join the Conservation Unit of the National Archives of Scotland,
based in west Edinburgh. The Unit has responsibility for the
collections distributed over this and two other sites in central
Edinburgh.

You must have a qualification/degree in conservation, together with
relevant practical experience. Accredited status is desirable and
NAS is committed to supporting staff to progress towards this
status.

Conservation Services Branch incorporates professional conservation;
Record Locations System Management; record moves and transportation
including internal and external van services and provision of
archival attendant services at Thomas Thomson House and collectively
the branch is responsible for all aspects of conservation and
preservation of the record collections held by the National Archives
of Scotland.

The professional conservators are directly responsible for setting
of policy and maintenance of professional standards and survey of
the record collections including selection and testing of materials
and guiding all preservation practices including environment,
storage, handling, exhibition loans and internal display,
appropriate use of surrogacy, provision of conservation and
preservation advice and information to the public, the archive
profession in Scotland, depositors (e.g. the Scottish courts and
Scottish Government Departments) and owners of privately held
records and support to all aspects of the work of Record Services
Division.

This part time post of Collections Conservator will act as interface
between conservation team and be responsible for developing and
implementing preventative strategies in association with colleagues
and Head of Branch; in particular to progress the NAS commitment to
the preservation of photographic media collections.

A degree of staff management is required.

Effective communication and presentation skills and flexibility are
essential.

This appointment is permanent and pensionable. Salary will be in the
range 21,292 - 28,520 pounds sterling. Starting salary is dependent
on experience and skills evident in the selection process. Pay is
performance related, offering quick progression to high achievers.
