Describing colour

From: Paul Sillitoe <paul>

Could anyone advise whether there is a preferred standard for the
description of colour of archival media--especially the colours of
papers and their coatings?

I have in mind something like Munsell, Pantone, or one of the
British Standards (of which there seem to be very many).

I need to make a visual assessment of medium colour against some
sort of standard colour chart, so that there could be some degree of
objectivity when describing a large number of individual examples of
media, as part of a wider research project.
