Part-Time: 21 hours/week

The Metropolitan Museum of Art seeks qualified candidates to fill a
part-time, three day per week, permanent position for an Assistant
Conservator of Photographs. The primary job responsibilities include
examination, technical investigation, documentation, and
conservation treatment on works from the collection, as well as loan
checks, surveys, collections care, environmental monitoring, and
other Museum activities as assigned by the Sherman Fairchild
Conservator of Photographs. Initiating and assisting with approved
research supporting technical art history, conservation treatment,
and preservation will be required. The Metropolitan Museum counts
among its holdings one of the most significant collections of
photographs in the nation and maintains an active exhibition and
loan schedule. Colleagues in curatorial, conservation science and
conservation work closely with other Museum professionals to study,
document, preserve, conserve and advance knowledge of these
holdings.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Due
to the large volume of works requested for research, loan and
exhibition, emphasis is placed on high quality of work, experience,
as well as efficient use of time and superior organizational skills.
Cleanliness and neat work habits are expected, as is ongoing
contribution to the maintenance of work areas. Photograph
Conservation at the Metropolitan endeavors to maintain the highest
possible ethical standard to care for its collections and to promote
the field. Metropolitan Conservators are expected to remain abreast
of developments in the field through publications, communication
with colleagues, conferences, courses and workshops, and to share
knowledge and information informally and formally through
publication and professional presentations.

The Assistant Conservator will be supervised by the Sherman
Fairchild Conservator of Photographs, and will be expected to work
well independently as well as with others in an active,
state-of-the-art conservation facility along side numerous
colleagues in conservation. Some assistance in the supervision of
Fellows, interns and volunteers may be required. Evaluation of staff
members takes place three months after employment and on an annual
basis thereafter.

Candidates should have a Master's Degree in Conservation or
equivalent experience as well as a minimum of four years of
experience in the field of photograph conservation. The salary level
will be commensurate with experience. Part-time staff members are
not permitted to act as couriers
