Scientists at the British Museum undertake research and routine
analysis of materials to investigate the history, technology,
deterioration, conservation and storage of artefacts in our
collections. These scientific activities support the Museum's wider
aims of preserving and presenting the collections; the results are
disseminated to a wide range of audiences through reports,
publications, lectures, information in the galleries and on the
Museum's website.

You will undertake petrographic examination and other investigations
into the raw materials, identification, provenancing and technology
of ceramic and stone artefacts; you will also play an active role in
projects designed to address issues related to their deterioration
and conservation. In addition, you will be expected to provide more
wide-ranging scientific services within the aims of the Museum.

You will have a strong knowledge and understanding of materials
science, and a good degree and/or higher qualification in a relevant
subject such as geology or materials science. You will be familiar
with the use of petrographic examination, have experience in the use
of techniques such as SEM-EDX and XRF, and be familiar with other
techniques including XRD, Raman, FT-IR and ICP-AES, which you will
apply to the study of ceramic and stone artefacts and materials from
the Museum collections. You may have worked in a university or
museum where you will have carried out investigations on stone
and/or ceramic museum artefacts. In this post you will combine
analysis of the materials and technology of artefacts to enhance
understanding of the Museum collections with study of their
deterioration and conservation. You will be expected to share your
work with the wider museum and conservation community through
lecturing and publication, and contributions to the Museum's public
programme.
