This position is responsible for the preservation and documentation
of work done for over 50,000 three-dimensional objects in the
collections of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. The
Objects Conservator performs a variety of unique treatments that
must be coordinated to provide the best care possible for the
artifacts while accommodating the use of collections for research
and exhibition. Skills should cover one or more of the following
object types, and the incumbent would be expected to expand their
abilities to deal with all of the following objects: fine art,
furniture, agricultural and industrial equipment, paper, metal,
glass, and ceramics.

Incumbent plans, coordinates and manages the preservation of the
cultural history object collections of the Indiana State Museum and
Historic Sites. Facilitates the use of the collections of the
Indiana State Museum for research and exhibition by preparing
artifacts for examination, making mounts and supervising the
handling of artifacts. Assesses the condition of the artifacts in
the collections to determine conservation needs. Performs
conservation treatments on artifacts needing care and document work
done. Purchases archival supplies and facilitate contracts that
relate to the care of cultural history objects and fine art
collections. Develops and maintains training literature and programs
for staff throughout the system, the state and non-state museum
systems. Makes recommendations for conservation objectives and
policy dealing with routine and complex problems. Communicates with
staff, other museums and the general public to promote the
preservation of artifacts and to promote the ethical
responsibilities of museums. Performs related duties as assigned.
