Library Affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is
seeking a Preservation Librarian. This is a full-time, 12-month,
continuing appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate
Professor available September 1, 2007 or later.

Responsibilities:  Under the direction of the Head of Information
Resources Management, this position is responsible for further
developing and implementing a comprehensive preservation program for
general and special collections in all formats. Develops
preservation policies and practices as well as short- and long-term
goals for the department. Works closely with representatives from
all areas of the Library to determine preservation needs and
priorities and to coordinate projects. Evaluates Library collections
for preservation and reformatting. Studies and makes recommendations
for appropriate applications of digital technologies for
preservation. Collaborates with information resources staff in
processing materials for the collection. Monitors environmental
conditions throughout the Library and in storage facilities;
establishes standards for care and handling of collections.
Supervises Conservation Lab and the Bindery Prep/Marking unit.
Maintains the Library's disaster plan and coordinates emergency
response strategies for the Library. Develops in-house educational
and training programs. Serves on Library committees and represents
the Library on matters concerning cooperative preservation programs.

Required Qualifications: ALA accredited Master's of Library Science;
managerial skills and supervisory ability; excellent organizational,
analytical, and problem-solving skills; ability to work
independently as well as part of a group in a collegial setting;
ability to work in a complex and changing environment with diverse
staff and users; excellent oral and written communication skills.
For appointment at the Assistant Professor rank: interest and
potential to meet established Library Affairs criteria for promotion
and tenure, including professional service and published research;
and familiarity with emerging preservation standards and new
technologies including knowledge of conservation and stabilization
treatments for general and special collections. For appointment at
the Associate Professor rank: a sustained record of peer-reviewed
research and publications including a record of professional service
at state, regional, or national levels; and minimum two years
preservation/conservation experience at an academic/research
library.

Preferred Qualifications:  second advanced degree. For appointment
at Assistant Professor rank: minimum one year
preservation/conservation experience at an academic/research
library.

Salary is competitive (Assistant Professor $41,000 minimum;
