"Holding it all together: ancient and modern approaches to joining,
    repair and consolidation"

The aim of this meeting is to bring together conservators,
scientists and curators with an interest in the methods by which
artefacts have been manufactured, repaired (both in antiquity and
modern times) and conserved by joining together a series of
components, using such techniques as gluing, casting, soldering,
luting, etc.

The range of the programme will be broad, covering most materials.
Sessions are hoped to include

    * ancient and ethnographic examples of manufacture, repair and
        reuse of multi-component artefacts

    * modern conservation and repair (including topics such as the
use of consolidants to stabilise friable materials, fills
        and joining methods)

    * methods for recognising and making potential joins (for
example for material from excavation or separated fragments
of sculpture, re-joined either in reality or by virtual
        means)

    * the ethics of revealing/concealing joins and repairs

The meeting will be of interest to conservators, conservation
scientists, museum scientists and curators. It is intended to
publish the conference proceedings (subject to referees' reviews) in
a volume to be produced by Archetype Publications. The conference
will be in English, and will include both oral and poster
presentations.

The conference fee will be UKP150 (UKP80 students and BM Friends).

This fee will include refreshments (including lunch), an evening
reception, a private view of the major Museum exhibition "The First
Emperor: China's Terracotta Army" and a copy of the conference
proceedings

We are issuing a call for papers and invite the submission of titles
and/or abstracts for oral and poster presentations. A form is
