The National Gallery of Victoria is seeking applications for two 12
month contract positions in the Conservation Department.

Conservator of Frames and Furniture (12 month contract)
Commencing in early August, 2007.
VPS3.2 - AU$53,373 + 9% superannuation.

Senior Conservator of Frames and Furniture (12 Month Contract)
Commencing in early September 2007 (Maternity Leave Replacement)
VPS5.1 - AU$67,556 + 9% superannuation.

These positions provide opportunities for experienced conservators
to work in the specialist Frames and Furniture Conservation section
of the NGV.  The NGV is Australia's oldest public art gallery with
two display venues and an off-site store. The Frames and Furniture
Conservation section undertake an extensive programme for the
conservation of frames and furniture as significant cultural
materials in their own right, as well as the manufacture of
reproduction picture frames.

The programme of work includes the technical examination and
conservation treatment of frames and furniture in the NGV
collection; research, project co-ordination, and practical input for
the reframing of pictures in the collection; managing programmes for
the preventive conservation of the collection, and the provision of
technical advice on handling, transport, display and storage of
frames and furniture items.

Conservator of Frames and Furniture (12 month contract)

    An integral member of the team, the role includes assisting in
    the administrative tasks of the section, including coordination
    of part of the work programme as appropriate.

    Requirements include:

        *   A tertiary degree in the conservation of cultural
            materials, specialising in frames, furniture, objects or
            a related field

        *   Demonstrated skills and experience in the conservation
            of highly valuable frames and furniture, including
            complex treatments

        *   Extensive knowledge and experience in the gilding,
            ornamentation and construction of historic frames and
            furniture is highly desirable

        *   Well-developed interpersonal, communication and
            organizational skills and the ability to work in a team
            environment

Senior Conservator of Frames and Furniture (12 month Contract)

    As manager of the Frames and Furniture Conservation section the
    role includes the supervision of staff and overall
    responsibility for the work programme.

    In addition, the successful candidate will participate in
    departmental and collection management meetings, contributing to
    the overall management of conservation programs at the NGV.

    Requirements include:

        *   A tertiary degree in the conservation of cultural
            materials, specialising in frames, furniture, objects or
            a related field

        *   Extensive and wide-ranging experience in the complex
            treatment of highly valuable frames and furniture

        *   Extensive knowledge of the materials and methods of
            manufacture of a wide range of frames and furniture,
            including knowledge of various periods and styles, and
            practical experience in gilding, ornamentation and
            construction methods

        *   Demonstrated management experience and well-developed
            leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
