The Audio Visual Conservator is part of team that provides a wide
variety of preservation services to the Emory University Libraries

The focus is on the preservation of sound recordings.   There will
also be involvement in the preservation of video recordings and
motion picture films.  The majority of A/V resources in need of
preservation are held in the Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book
Library (MARBL), the University Archives, the Pitts Theology
Library, and the Music and Media Library.  The position reports to
the Head of the University Libraries Preservation Office and will
work closely with librarians, archivists, and curators throughout
the Emory Libraries.

Specific breakdown of the job duties:

70%  Digitization of Sound Recordings

    Stabilize, clean, and evaluate the condition of sound recordings
    in a wide variety of formats

    Judge whether sound recordings can be digitized locally or
    whether they should be sent to a vendor for digitization.

    Digitize sound recordings.

    Record metadata

    Finish deliverables of digitized files (burning media, labeling,
    duplication, uploading to network storage, etc.)

    Manage, hire, train, and coordinate work of student employees.

    Identify and evaluate hardware and digitization software.

    Evaluate and correspond with vendors and monitor their work

    Predict, track, and report project costs

    Record, analyze, and report statistics and write narrative
    project reports

30% Planning and Management

    Prioritize work by interviewing collection stakeholders,
    performing collection surveys, and reviewing the condition of
    individual items.

    Advise on the possibilities, risks, costs, and benefits of
    preservation options for audio and video recordings and motion
    picture film.

    Develop action plans for completing work

    Assist in developing metadata protocols

    Assist in developing strategies for delivery of digital sound
    and moving images.

    Assist in developing grant applications.

    Fulfill the member roles of learning, communicating, providing,
    contributing and collaborating as defined in the Member and
    Leader Roles and Responsibilities document and actively
    participate in continuous improvement efforts.

    Participate in library and university committees and in
    professional development activities as needed to support and
    meet the changing environment of the library and the academic

The successful candidate will have highly desirable qualifications
for this position which may include: Experience in using ProTools;
SoundForge[similar sound editing software]; wide variety of
audio/visual formats including analog discs, magnetic tapes, digital
files; handling of fragile library materials; cataloging sound
collections; archive, special collections library, or museum.
