(Leeds).

This is a three day course on cultural material X-radiography, aimed
at conservators, finds researchers and all specialists who work
with, or commission, X-radiographic images. Delivery will be a
mixture of lectures, seminars and practical sessions. Each day can
be taken as a stand alone element or combined to provide a
comprehensive grounding in radiography, taking delegates from the
basics of conventional radiography through to the latest advances
and applications of digital radiography.

The course will look at the role of radiography across the breadth
of cultural material studies, including:

    Archaeological finds
    Metals and stone objects
    Human and Animal bones
    Textiles and other organic objects
    Ethnographic Material
    Ceramics
    Paintings and Paper

All delegates are encouraged to bring radiographic films for
digitisation and items they would like radiographed. Please check

Course Programme

Day 1
Theory and Practice

    Concentrates on how to produce high quality radiographs and
    their interpretation, including; applications of X-radiography,
    X-ray generation and beam characteristics, radiation safety,
    optimisation of image quality, special techniques and how to
    view images for the best results, Practical: Viewing and
    interpretation of x-ray images

Day 2
Applications and Experience

    Looks at a range of materials and the specialist techniques
    required to obtain optimal results. This includes a series of
    presentations by specialists covering radiographic techniques
    for: archaeological assemblages, metals, ceramics, large
    objects, human and other animal bone, paintings, textiles, paper
    and other organic materials. Practical: Taking and developing
    x-ray images (Option to view the collection of early
    radiographic images from the collections at the National Media
    Museum)

Day 3
Digital Radiography

    Including: evaluating and purchasing digital equipment, digital
    imaging modalities, digital image basics, file formats, storage
    and metadata, digital image processing, digitising and
    dissemination. Practical: Digital Image Acquisition and
    Manipulation.

Fees include tuition, course documentation for the days booked (full
manual is approximately 120 pages), CDROM with a full copy of all
imaging software used on the course, lunch and morning and afternoon
refreshments.
