Assistant Conservator

Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)
35 hrs/wk; Monday - Friday, 9 am to 5 pm

Schedule subject to change based on the needs of the Department.
Effective: Immediately

Qualifications: Master's degree in conservation or museum studies
and a minimum of one year related experience required.  Must possess
highly developed skills at examining objects and determining
conservation plans for repair and stabilization.  Significant
experience with dressing historic costumes and the handling of
historic textiles, as well as, familiarity with requirements
associated with works on paper.  Demonstrated knowledge of current
methods of conservation, treatment and storage including but not
limited to basic chemistry, pattern making (flat and draping),
textile science, garment construction, sewing techniques, cleaning
methods, use of dyes, and fiber analysis and weave structure.
Ability to work on numerous projects simultaneously with various
members of the staff required.  Excellent organizational and
computer skills required; familiarity with and/or ability to learn
BiTech financial accounting software and Argus or other museum
collections management systems preferred.  Ability to learn, adapt
and keep current with the latest developments in conservation
practice.

Duties and Responsibilities: Work closely in conjunction with the
Museum's Conservator to plan and complete work in the department to
serve the strategic needs of the Museum. Assist in the examination
of items to assess condition.  Recommend types of repairs and
methods for conservation of collections.  Perform repairs and
conservation of collections objects.  Determine and apply proper
storage methods for collections.  Assist with the installation of
exhibitions, preparation of objects for photography, and the
presentation of objects lent to other institutions for display.  Act
as courier on behalf of the Museum both nationally and
internationally when required.  Write condition reports and monitor
climate conditions in the Museum.  Perform key administrative
functions including ordering of supplies and work on the financial
accounting and collections management systems to ensure proper
management of departmental resources and record keeping associated
with the Museum's collections.
