Project Conservator (Hidden Histories)
Temporary Post full time for 10 months
(due to end of funding).

    Responsible to: Outreach Officer
    Grade 6

    Purpose of post: To manage the conservation work related to the
    Hidden Histories Project, including the conservation of groups
    of objects/objects and the mounting of groups of objects to
    modern standards of collections care. The postholder will be
    responsible for the scoping out of the conservation work,
    supervision of specialist conservators and supervision of
    volunteers.

    The Hidden Histories community project (winter 2007 to spring
    2008) is a project  to turn community groups into active Museum
    stakeholders by sharing curatorial knowledge and enabling groups
    to display their perspectives on the collection. The Petrie
    Museum of Egyptian Archaeology contains one of the largest
    archaeological collections of personal items from Egypt and
    Sudan, including 2,000 strings of beads worn as jewellery, from
    5000 BC to AD 1000. Most of these are currently displayed in
    flat cases attracting little attention from visitors. The
    DCF-funded Hidden Histories project aims to transform the
    display with new interpretations from London communities,
    especially from the countries of origin, Egypt and Sudan. The
    experience and outcome of this project are expected to
    contribute to the redisplay of the Petrie Museum collections in
    a new building at UCL planned to open in 2010, the Institute of
    Cultural Heritage.

    Salary will be on Grade 6 currently UKP20,437 to UKP24,402 per
    annum plus London Allowance of UKP2,497.

Project Conservator (Re-packing)
Temporary Post full-time contract for 9 months (due to funding)

    Responsible to: Conservation Manager
    Grade 6

    Purpose of post: To manage the repacking work related to the
    museum's move to the Institute for Cultural Heritage, to modern
    standards of collections care.

    The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology is a nationally
    designated collection and of international significance.  The
    Museum is currently undergoing a period of change as the staff
    prepare for a new build museum in the Institute for Cultural
    Heritage, UCL.

    This post will continue the highly important re-packing of the
    collections, currently housed in drawers--preparing them for the
    move to the new museum and for their new housing in visible
    storage drawers.

    You will need to be patient, highly dexterous and used to
    supervising volunteers.

    The project may continue if extra funds are granted by the
    Friends of the Petrie Museum.

    Salary will be on Grade 6 currently UKP20,437 to UKP24,402 per
    annum plus London Allowance of UKP2,497.
