Just to clarify, the above should have read "before CoOL's web
server". It was not meant to suggest that these resources preceded
the world's first web sites--the credit for which goes to Tim
Berners-Lee then working for CERN, now at the World Wide Web
Consortium (W3C)--, but merely that CoOL's Gopher and WAIS servers
preceded its web server. For those of you interested in such
history, the first web site was built at CERN in late 1991, and the
first in the US here at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center a few
months after that.
