Barcode on photographic print

From: Donald Farren <dfarren>
Date: Saturday, March 3, 2007
I recently bought a nineteenth-century photographic print, which
when it arrived I discovered bears, on the verso of the (rather
thin) backing on which the photograph is mounted, a barcode-type
label. Two questions:

    1. Am I correct in thinking that the self-adhesive of the label
will eventually disintegrate and loosen but in the meanwhile
will discolor and stain the backing, the stain likely
        migrating to the photograph itself?

    2. How can I remove the label?
