I'm not certain if this will help, but I have a copy of The Painter,
Gilder, and Varnisher's Companion, published by Henry Carey Baird
and Co., Philadelphia, 1869 (my copy, 16th ed., 1889).

There is no acknowledgement of any translation, but there is an
appendix containing, "Chevreul's Principles of Harmony and Contrast
of Colors."

If you have a specific question regarding a technique or material,
please let me know and I will search for it in the text.
