"Holding it all together; ancient and modern approaches to joining,
    repair and consolidation"
The British Museum
21-22 February 2008

The aim of this meeting is to bring together conservators,
scientists and curators with an interest in the methods by which
artefacts have been manufactured, repaired (both in antiquity and
modern times) and conserved by joining together a series of
components, using such techniques as gluing, casting, soldering,
luting, etc.

The range of the programme will be broad, covering most materials.
Topics are hoped to include:

    * ancient manufacture, repair and reuse of multi-component
        artefacts

    * modern conservation and repair (including topics such as the
use of consolidants to stabilise friable materials, fills
        and joining methods).

    * methods for recognising and making potential joins (for
example for material from excavation or separated fragments
of sculpture, re-joined either in reality or by virtual
        means)

    * the ethics of revealing/concealing joins and repairs.

The meeting will be of interest to conservators, conservation
scientists, museum scientists and curators. The conference will be
in English, and will include both oral and poster presentations.
