Paper, Book and Photographic Conservators at
York Minster Library

Leafcasting Workshop
Tutor: Stephen Allen ACR
Wednesday 28 March 2007
9:30am - 4:30pm

Cost: GBP125 including VAT

The theory and practice of paper leafcasting will be covered
with hands on opportunities to make paper infill repairs.

Participants will learn how to make up colour matched pulp and
use it to repair missing corners or worm holes. This is a
particularly useful technique for repairing book pages as the
method does not lead to an increase in page thickness.
Techniques for repairing sheets with text on both sides will be
demonstrated as well as the facility for casting sheets of toned
repair paper for alternative repair methods.

Lining Workshop
Tutor: Richard Hawkes ACR
Wednesday 2 May 2007, 9.30am to 4.30pm
Cost: GBP125 including VAT

This is a practical workshop, with hands on opportunities to
practice and discuss a range of lining techniques for works on
paper, both art and archives. As well as traditional lining
techniques for Western papers, adaptations for problem media.
large works and using linings to flatten and mount paper will be
shown. Aqueous and non-aqueous adhesives will be used.
Participants will make use of the studio's kari-bari board and
practice some alternative flattening and drying methods.

The Care of Glass Plate Negatives
Tutor: Angels Arribas
Thursday 3 May 2007
9:30am to 4:30pm

Cost: GBP125 including VAT

This one day course covers the principal practical issues
regarding the preservation and conservation of glass plate
negatives. The course will help those caring for these objects
to identify the common processes, assess their condition,
prioritise conservation treatments and implement initial
preservation actions. Participants will receive a background to
the commonest glass plate negative processes, their components
and stability, and learn the main types of deterioration. On the
practical side, the participant will be introduced to the first
steps in the preservation of these photographic processes
including handling, dry cleaning and storage procedures.
Finally, participants will have an opportunity to discuss
preservation needs in their own collection. This workshop is
also suitable for archivists, curators and those caring for
    photographic collections.
