Post-Doctoral RA (2 year fixed term post)

Courtauld Institute of Art

Post-Doctoral RA
Conservation and Technology Dept.
2 year fixed term post
Salary UKP27,467 per annum
Start date: April 30, 2007

A post-doctoral RA is required to work within an interdisciplinary
team (from the Courtauld and Warwick) on a new EPSRC/AHRC "Design
for the C21st" research project. The project involves the design and
testing of tensioned fabric as a medium for sculpturing
architectural enclosures, and as an artist material. The RA will
work closely with Warwick and Heathcoat and Co. Ltd. (manufacturers
of conservation fabric) to arrive at a design of woven fabric, which
more closely suits the requirements of a canvas painting support.
The RA will help develop the tests for the fabrics on a bi-axial
tensile tester under different environmental conditions. They will
also use an Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer (ESPI) to
measure and compare 2D strain maps with spline modelling performed
by Warwick. We require a skilled experimentalist, with either a
physics or engineering background and ideally with an interest in
art conservation and/or design. Previous experience in the testing
textiles, conservation or optical metrology would be an advantage.
Applications from conservators with a scientific interest are very
welcome.
