SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to
announce our Winter 2001 preservation workshop schedule:

Preservation Management

    Instructors are Christine Wiseman, SOLINET Preservation
    Education Officer.
    Guest speaker is Janice Mohlhenrich, Coordinator, Preservation
    Initiatives and Services at Emory University.
    Thursday, February 15, 2001 at SOLINET, Atlanta, GA.

    This session will outline the manager's role in organizing and
    planning preservation activities in a library or archives. It
    includes lecture and discussions covering the following topics:

        *   The nature of library materials, elements of a
            preservation program, effects of storage  conditions.

        *   Organization and Planning--staffing, workflow, needs
            assessment.

        *   Selection--determining the best options, and juggling
            competing needs for traditional activities with digital
            projects.

        *   Strategies for integrating preservation into library
            operations.

    This workshop is designed for administrative and/or managerial
    staff responsible for planning, implementing, or managing a
    preservation program in a library or archives.

    Cost is $95 Full members ($85 early bird, $120 late
    registration); $105 Associate users ($95 early bird, $130 late
    registration); $135 Affiliate (non-members), ($125 early bird,
    $160 late registration).

Preservation of Photographic Materials

    This full-day introductory workshop discusses means of
    preserving photographic materials based on real world issues and
    situations. Among the topics covered:

        *   Photographic materials and processes
        *   Issues with print, color, film, glass, albums, etc.
        *   Environment and storage guidelines
        *   Housing guidelines
        *   Exhibition guidelines
        *   Duplication/reformatting
        *   New technologies
        *   Collection  maintenance/preservation planning

        This workshop is designed for those who have photographic
        collections and will be participating significantly for
        those who are responsible for the care of use of the
        materials.

        Instructor is Andrew Robb, a photograph conservator whose
        clients have included the Nation Gallery of Art, the Library
        of Congress, the National Museum of American Art, and the
        National Museum of American History.

        The workshop will take place on Friday, March 16, 2001 at
        Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, TN.

        Cost is $95 Full members ($85 early bird, $120 late
        registration); $105 Associate users ($95 early bird, $130
        late registration); $135 Affiliate (non-members), ($125
        early bird, $160 late registration).

Fire Safety: For Museums, Libraries,and Archives

    This workshop shows you how to survive s fire in your
    institution with a focus on institutional responsibilities as
    outlined in Occupational Safety and Health Administration
    (OSHA) and Nation Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
    regulations and standards. Participants learn about different
    types of detection and suppression systems, and the use of
    portable fire extinguishers.

    The workshop is recommended for curators, librarians,
    archivists, administrators, physical plant personnel, docents,
    volunteers, or anyone who works within a museum, archive or
    library..

    The price of the workshop includes the 80-page SOLINET
    publication, Can You Stand the Heat? A Fire Safety Primer for
    Libraries, Archives, and Museums.

    Instructor is Michael Trinkley, Director of Chicora Foundation.
    He is recognized as an authority on preservation assessment,
    disaster planning, HVAC, pest control, and fire safety, and is
    the author of Can You Stand the Heat?

    The workshop will take place on Thursday, March 29, 2001 at the
    University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS.

    Cost is $95 Full members ($85 early bird, $120 late
    registration); $105 Associate users ($95 early bird, $130 late
    registration); $135 Affiliate (non-members), ($125 early bird,
    $160 late registration).
