Title: Librarian (Preservation Technical Specialist)
GS-1410-09 (10750) $32,380 - $42,091 ($35,310 - $45,900) *
* Salary reflects locality pay.

Position Location: Collection Care Section, Binding and Collection
Care Division, Preservation Directorate, Library Services; James
Madison Memorial Building.

Tour of Duty: Full-time.  Incumbent will work a flexitime work
schedule.

Type of Appointment: Permanent: Non-supervisory, bargaining unit
position.

Number of Vacancies: One

Brief description of duties: The Librarian provides technical
expertise in the area of housing and physical treatment or repair of
non-artifactual materials in the Library's general collections;
determines and makes appropriate treatment decisions regarding items
routed for physical treatment, boxing or re-housing.  Develops and
implements improved housing and repair methods based on changing
technologies.  Trains lower-graded technicians in repair, in-housing
binding, and the construction of custom-fitted enclosures using the
automated box-making machine. Monitors operation of the automated
box-making machine and arranges for inspection and routine
maintenance.  Maintains frequent contact with the manufacturer to
seek advice and resolve problems.  Prepares specifications to
improve the system software for greater flexibility in operating the
machine.  Monitors use and maintenance of Macintosh or
IBM-compatible computers.  Establishes and coordinates an inventory
control system to track materials through the various stages of
preparation, treatment, and review.  Collects and analyzes
worksheets and other data and produces statistical and other reports
as needed.
