Fratelli Alinari Program of Workshops in Conservation of Photographic Materials Understanding the Photographic album Conservation lab at Fratelli Alinari (Firenze, Italy, Largo Fratelli Alinari, 15) November 7-10 2000 A unique, hands-on workshop, utilizing the rich photographic album collection of Fratelli Alinari, will be led by Grant Romer, Director of the Advanced Residency Program in Photographs Conservation at George Eastman House. Romer, with Alinari conservator, Yoshiko Kondo, will explore the history, typology and conservation challenges that photograph albums present to the curator, librarian, collector and restorer. A wide range of albums will be examined, discussed and analysed in the conservation context, Case studies of conservation responses will be presented and criticized. Methods of survey making and stabilisation will be demonstrated. Primary focus will be upon developing sophisticated understanding of this form of photographic object in order to form coherent and reasoned approaches to preservation. Fratelli Alinari, custodian of one of the world most important and ever-growing photographic archives, is planning to act as the first organisation in Italy to offer a specialized training program in the field of photography conservation. In this perspective Alinari organises a series of workshops dedicated to the different aspects of conservation of photographic materials, relying on the cooperation of the world best renowned experts. After the successful workshops in conservation of Daguerreotypes and of photographic prints, the program will continue with two workshops that have been designed as a conservation education collaborative between Fratelli Alinari and the Faculty of Advanced Residency Program in Photograph Conservation at George Eastman House. Those workshops seek to blend the collection resources and institutional experience of both institutions in effective education of curators, historians, archivists, librarians, photographers and conservators dedicated to the preservation of photography.
