Chief Conservator Biltmore Estate The Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC, seeks a Chief Conservator with expertise in textiles or objects. Responsibilities include examination, documentation, and treatment of objects or textiles from the Biltmore Estate collection; supervision of furniture, textile, object, and upholstery conservation staff; development and management of budgets; management of an established conservation business that provides conservation services to outside clients and that utilizes approximately 15% of staff time; collections care, including environmental monitoring, training of staff in object handling, responding to collections incidents and emergencies, and collaborating with curatorial staff on emergency planning and collections storage. The Chief Conservator reports to the Director of Museum Services and is an important contributor to a team made up of curatorial, conservation, registration, archives, and interpretation staff. Requirements include a master's degree from a recognized conservation program or equivalent in training and experience, minimum of ten years of conservation experience, minimum of five years of supervisory experience, a conservation speciality in objects or textiles, experience developing and managing budgets, excellent oral and written communication skills, and a team-oriented approach to conservation and museum services activities. Experience managing a conservation business is desired, as is experience supervising conservators working with a variety of media, such as textiles, metal, wood, books, paper, glass, and ceramics.
