Symposium on textile conservation

From: Jenny Barnett <andelos>
Date: Thursday, September 7, 2000
Focus on Textile Conservation
November 13-17, 2000

Introduction: The Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (
ICN), The Dutch Textile Committee (TCM) and the Textiles Working
Group of the ICOM International Committee for Conservation are
organizing a whole week dedicated to the conservation of textiles.

November 13-14. Archaeological Textiles.

Conservation and research: The ICOM CC Working group Textiles
and the ICN have organized an interim meeting which will focus
on the conservation of archaeological textiles. One day will be
devoted to textiles from a wet archaeological context; the next
day will be focused on textiles from a dry context. The
preservation of the integrity of the textile object and its role
as a carrier of information will be the central theme.

November 15. Conservation workshops and museums.

Tours to textile conservation workshops and museums with
important textile collections will be organized.

November 16. "Textile conservation, past--present--future".
The Dutch Textile Committee will hold one of their traditional
"Textile days". Many Dutch textile conservators are concerned
about the erosion of the technical and theoretical knowledge of
historic textiles in the Netherlands. The aim of the day is to
take stock of the situation locally and internationally. The
Past will focus on the history of textile conservation and the
changing ethical viewpoints. The Present will focus on the image
of the textile conservator in general and on various textile
conservation workshops: the speakers will attempt to challenge
this image. The Future focuses on recent developments in wet
    cleaning techniques.

November 17, Conservation workshops and museums

Tours to textile conservation workshops and museums with
important textile collections will be organized. This will a
repeat of the tours on 15 November.

Location: The symposia will be held at The Netherlands Institute for
Cultural Heritage which is located on the newly landscaped Museum
Square close by the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the
Municipal Museum of Modern Art in Amsterdam.
