19-23 November 2000

Course Tutor: Simon Haigh

This practical course is intended for conservators who work on books
regularly or occasionally, newly qualified conservators who wish to
add to their skills, those who wish to re-establish skills, and
those who wish to gain leather working skills for work mainly on
objects, rather than books.

Topics will include:

    * The history and context of leather paring and selection of
        skins

    * Selection, preparation, adaptation and sharpening of tools

    * Selection of paring surfaces, and use of paring machines.

    * Reference will be made to the development of binding styles
which have an effect on the use of leather as a covering
        material.

    * A comprehensive range of techniques will be taught covering
        all aspects of leather paring.

The main purpose of the Course is to provide practical experience.
Teaching will be by means of demonstrations and visual presentation,

help and guidance. Notes will be provided.
