Suction tables

Paper conservators who may want to purchase a suction table from MSC
(Museum Support Corporation) should note that the latest product
guide offers a suction table for paper conservators that is
significantly more expensive than the same product marketed to
paintings conservators.

The product 0284 (48 x 72 inches suction platen), located on page 8
of the catalogue is marketed to paper conservators for $3500.00. The
same suction platen with the addition of a variable speed vacuum (a
value of $1430.00, see page 22) is marketed to paintings
conservators as the MSC Converter Package, product 0341 (4 x 6 foot
suction platen), located on page 12 and is priced at $ 3120.00. A
paper conservator pays $4930.00 for the same product that the
paintings conservator pays $ 3120.00.

MSC staff confirmed that the two suction platens are the same during
a conversation in May of 2000. So paper conservators should save
$380.00 and get a free vacuum thrown in with the bargain.
